Overview
A space for art to bloom.
The Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans hosts artist residencies, providing working and living spaces on the Center’s two-acre campus along the historic Bayou Road. As part of the planned growth, The Joan Mitchell Center engaged Impetus as the Design-Assist contractor to lead the new construction of the Joan Mitchell Artists’ Studio, a single-story building containing 10 light-filled studios, communal meeting space, and a media lab. Surrounded by residential homes, this project presented a myriad of obstacles, including a framework made of structural steel, wood framing, and metal studs; multiple angles associated with the roof structure and clerestory windows; and extensive campus-wide site work and infrastructure upgrades. The park-like landscaping includes native plants, a bioswale, and a rainwater garden to help reduce harmful runoff and promote Louisiana’s unique ecosystem.
Completed in 2015, this 10,000-square-foot building was designed by local architect, Lee Ledbetter & Associates.
