Overview
Landmark historic airport flies into the future.
Lakefront Airport, located in New Orleans East adjacent to the Industrial Canal, was slated for major site and drainage improvements by the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works. The upgrades included milling the existing runway surface, removing the existing marks from the intersecting taxiways, replacing surface with hot mix asphalt, and install new airfield markings. Additional drainage improvements included the removal and installation of two cross drains, installation of a coffer dam system, and improvements to side drainage. An additional one inch of asphalt overlay provides an overall thickness of five inches of overlay to the project.
The historic airport was the largest airport in the U.S. when it original opened in 1934 and the first combined land and seaplane air terminal in the world.
Completed in 2020, this project was performed in partnership with Schrenk, Endom, and Flanagan.
